Athlete’s Foot

Understanding Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, particularly between the toes and on the soles. Despite the name, you don’t need to be an athlete to get it—this condition thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms, communal showers, and even inside sweaty shoes.

Although often mild at first, athlete’s foot can spread, become painful, or lead to more serious infections if left untreated. Fortunately, with proper care and hygiene, it’s both treatable and preventable.

What to Look For

  • Itching, burning, or stinging between the toes or on the soles
  • Redness, scaling, or peeling skin
  • Cracked or blistered areas that may ooze or crust
  • Dry, scaly patches on the bottom or sides of the feet
  • A foul odor, especially when removing shoes or socks
  • Thickened or discolored toenails (if the fungus spreads)

What Causes It?

Athlete’s foot is caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes. These organisms thrive in moist, dark environments—like damp socks, unventilated shoes, and communal showers. It’s highly contagious and can spread through direct skin contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces such as locker room floors, pool decks, and towels.

People with sweaty feet, tight footwear, or compromised immune systems are at higher risk, as are those who walk barefoot in public spaces.

When to Seek Help

Mild athlete’s foot can sometimes be managed with over-the-counter antifungal creams, but if symptoms persist, worsen, or spread to the toenails, it’s best to consult a podiatrist. Pain, open sores, or signs of secondary infection (such as increased redness or swelling) also warrant professional care.

How We Diagnose and Treat It

At Premier Foot & Ankle Specialists, diagnosis is often made based on the appearance of the skin. In some cases, we may take a skin scraping for lab testing to confirm the type of fungus.

Treatment typically includes prescription-strength antifungal creams, sprays, or oral medications. We’ll also provide guidance on keeping your feet clean and dry, avoiding reinfection, and protecting others from catching the fungus. For severe or chronic cases—especially those that affect the toenails—longer-term treatment may be necessary.
